Narni - km 54

Narni is situated as a bulwark precisely at the mouth of the Nera Valley, as if to protect the entrance. The impressive Augustus bridge throws his supreme untouched arch across the valley, and the roads, which preserve the flavour of the Middle Ages lead up inside the walls to reach Piazza dei Priori, where we find the Palazzo del Podesta dating from 1200, and the Duomo (cathedral), dedicated to San Giovenale, the first bishop of the town.
Higher up is the Rocca or fortress, built by Cardinal Albornoz, perfectly restored and returned to its former beauty. Do not miss the Abbey of San Cassiano, surrounded by ancient oaks and the "underground town" which preserves a church with 13th and 15th century frescoes, and a prison cell used by the Court of the Inquisition, and still bearing wall graffiti by the prisoners.
